SUMMARY

Jim has been in the windows business for 30+ years, and has a deep knowledge of manufacturers and literally all types of glass. There’s so much happening in this dynamic industry! Glass and framing materials constantly change and someone worth their weight has to pay attention to new technology. Jim still considers himself a student and he keeps up via manufacturers’ technical bulletins, continuously reading the trade journals on glass, frame materials, adhesives, sealants, visiting factories, and attending conferences/tradeshows. Obviously the more you learn, the better you serve your clients.

We at Solar Glass Window & Door put window manufacturers through their paces by specifying certain things that aren’t in their catalog. We’ll talk with contractors and/or homeowners and get ideas on paper, send it in, and see if the engineers can make it cost effectively. It’s very gratifying to go back and see the finished building and know that we contributed to a homeowner’s vision.

As a young man Jim was hired by a window company to fix, deliver, and sell them. Jim really enjoyed sales, and he has been selling windows for three decades. Windows can be very detailed and complex and there are many ways to make mistakes. Since Jim is a detailed-oriented person (love analyzing blueprints), he is a smart, educated, and very competent windows guy.

Jim liked construction and followed the entire process when he had a house built. Jim's passion is taking things already built and making them better – including fixing up his never updated 40-year-old home in Greeley, CO.

YEAR STARTED IN THIS BUSINESS

EXPERIENCE

Founded in 1981 as Rocky Mountain Solar Glass, we installed solar panels and sun spaces. The company holds a patent on a glazing system called SnapCap and we were known for that product. When the solar panel craze dried up, we diversified into residential windows and changed the name to Solar Glass Window & Door. We currently sell windows, doors, and skylights to custom builders, commercial & residential contractors, retrofit installers, and homeowners.

CURRENT PROJECT

Marvin Windows are the only wood window Solar Glass Window & Door sells. We chose Marvin based on their unparalleled quality, guarantees, and the fact that their made in the U.S. Many of the contractors we work with automatically dismiss Marvin based on price. To educate them, Jim recently arranged to take five (5) contractors to Marvin’s manufacturing facility Minnesota. Jim's goal for the trip was to literally show them why that product is more expensive – but worth the money. They got to see first-hand how well the windows are made, how they’re the highest quality product, and not quickly thrown together.
There are different organizations that set standards for window manufacturers and Marvin is the only company who meets or exceeds all the standards. Ever since Jim took the contractors to Marvin, every single one has purchased Marvin windows and not one has voiced a price objection. To them, it’s no longer a price issue any more. They now realize the high quality of that manufacturer and want to recommend that product to their clients.

SPECIALTIES

Jim's philosophy is “the best window is the window you don’t notice.” That is, unless the window is integral to the aesthetics of your room. Most homeowners just want the crank to work; or the window to open & shut; or for the wind to stay out; or to be cool in summer and warm in winter. What Jim does is educate buyers (either contractors or homeowners) on the different types of glass to use in a particular area to maximize or minimize solar heat gain.

Solar Glass Window & Door offers different glazing in the windows we supply. Depending on its location in the building, we can apply a different glaze to minimize or maximize heat gain. Plus, Jim is very proud of our warranty. Typically a 1-year warranty only covers materials. However, if you buy from Solar Glass Window & Door and the material has a defect, we pick up the labor cost to fix that defect.

Our ideal clients are the actual people who are going to use the products and have done their homework. Jim looks at his job as someone who provides enough information so people can make good decisions themselves. We would rather have homeowners ask many questions so we can tailor solutions to what they want to accomplish.
